reminisce: horse

Posted September 17, 2008

This is one of my oldest graffiti photos - a B&W, pre-digital image of a spray painted horse by Ruby Rose, A.K.A. Reminisce, taken on Mission Street in downtown SF sometime in the 1990’s.

What has always impressed me about Reminisce’s horses is how much they look like those depicted in cave paintings, like those at Lascaux and Altimira. The technique is actually much the same: On one hand, cans of spray paint used by modern artists; on the other, a fine spray of pigment in liquid, forced through the lips - spitting - employed by the Magdalenian cave painters.

On the subject of cave painting and street art, I can’t resist linking to some on-topic graffiti by Banksy currently bouncing about the net.  Here’s the Flickr link.
